Mix it Up

Dries Van Noten (pictures from http://www.elleuk.com/)

A key trend for Spring / summer 08 is a mish mash of patterns and colours. This was particularly evident and eye catching at Dries Van Noten. I think this relaxed and casual feel to co ordiantion is slightly reminiscent of the surfer and hawaian vibe. I have tried experimenting with msising up patterns myself and discovered it is not as easy to achieve this trend as it looks.

I have decided to be a bit more adventurous with my clothes this year. I think this look would be a great first expedition into creativity for me, as a normally very conservative dresser. I have managed to find a number of garments which already exploit this look by marrying patterns, that are a match made in heaven.

Get Yer Skates on Skirt - White Stuff

Tiered Multi Print Maxi Skirt - Next

I have had a few ideas for a homestyled mish mash outfit but I am struggling a bit with the rules for this kind of combination- perhaps the rules are there are no rules! I have therefore explored a few different possibilities in the hope of finding one that really works.

For a really eye catching bold look mix 2 big bold prints -

For a more chilled out and relaxed look mix muted colours and smaller patterns Top and Skirt - White Stuff

For a subtle effect - try different patterns, same colours - skirt and top - White Stuff
This is definitely a summer look, so at least I have time to experiment and consider lots of combinations before I go public. Some other possibilities inlude:
  • Stripes with spots, stars, flowers or any other repeating pattern
  • Mix similar patterns in completely clashing colours
  • Mix black and white prints with really bright colours such as green, yellow or pink
  • Mixing 3 different patterns - 2 in similar and muted colours, one in a bright colour
  • Just mix whatever and see what happens
