Peter Pilotto - LFW AW09

peter pilotto aw09

Another of my favourite collections from London Fashion Week was Peter Pilotto. This seems to one of the most talked about labels of the moment. The prints of Peter Pilotto and the amazingly draping of Christopher De Vos are a marriage made in heaven. This time there were further treats in store. Clever mixing of prints which i absolutely love. Very very wearable and very flattering. I love the minute details that you can clearly see even in the catwalk photos. Another one for my wish list.

Mary Katrantzou - The Sweet Smell of Success

In case you were wondering, the title of this post refers to perfume or perfume bottles to be precise. Perfume bottles were the inspiration for the bold striking prints featured in the London Fashion Week collection of Mary Katrantzou. Mary was awarded New Generation sponsorship for her autumn winter 09 collection and I am so glad she was. She has pulled out all the stops in creating a collection that was so amazing on every level. From the very wearable and flattering shapes to clever use of the graphic prints to the oversized chunky jewellery that were the icing on the cake.
I loved the way the narrow necks of the perfume bottles in the prints fell exactly on the waists giving the illusion of exaggerated tiny waists. This is definitely a look I will be trying out.

There were a few collections that I really loved at London Fashion Week and Erdem was one of them. Lots of gorgeous prints and embellishments on in bright colour and black satin. The collection was incredibly striking and Style.com even likened it to Christian Lacroix. I loved the doll like curved empire line dresses with bell shaped skirts and the marbled colour trousers suit. Overall a very glossy and richly coloured look, I can't wait.

Richard Nicoll - Corsets, Suspenders and Undies

pictures from http://www.style.com/.
Richard Nicoll is slowly becoming more adventurous with his collections. His AW09 collection definitely made me sit up and take note, some refreshingly different but for the most part very wearable pieces. There was a very obvious but at the same time subtle, underwear theme with suspender clasps either hanging or ebellishing clothing, corset style dresses and slip like dresses. He had also played around with the idea of see through and transparent clothing which created interest by revealing other layers of clothing underneath. Trench coats were also seen throughout the show with some being cropped to just below shoulder level with contrasting style shimmering slip dresses underneath. The muted neutral tones of the whole collections were a welcome change from the usual autumn winter pallettes of dark clothes.
I particularly like the effect of the very short cropped jackets and shirts. Perhaps a good look for a bit DIY creation, now where did I put my scissors?

Q & A with Rowan of Kitschen Sink

I am delighted that Rowan of Kitschen Sink has agreed to be interviewed for my latest fashion Journalism assignment. She makes gorgeous and fun jewellery that is great for girls with their own individual sense of style. You can find out more on her blog, Etsy or Folksy. I was also really excited to find out about Folksy the British equivalent of Etsy - you learn something new every day! Her are the questions and answers.

I love your jewellery, how would you describe the style of your jewellery?

I tend to use 'whimsical, kitschy, funky & fun'. I try to use as much colour as possible, avoiding earthy and natural tones. In terms of the materials I use, I like plastics and found objects. I'm really trying to make an alternative to boho/blend-in fashion that seems to be everywhere. The high street is taking over and there is little available for alternative fashionistas to just pick up on a shopping trip.

Why did you decide to start making jewellery?

I have always been creative. My Grandma spent lots of time teaching me how to paint, knit, collage and so forth.Fast forward a couple of decades and I'm in short-term unemployment. I saw some over-priced, simple earrings in a boutique and thought 'I could do better than that'...

Where do you get your inspiration from?
I love the colour schemes and designs on club-night fliers, and advertisements in teen/young women magazines. I also love the style of Gwen Stefani and Kelly Osbourne, they aren't afraid to wear what they like or succumb to the everyday, mundane 'boho' look the high street attempts to flog us. I like to check out what's being worn on the streets of Tokyo and around Harajuku station, Japanese street fashion seems so much more fun than anywhere else!

Do you consider it a job or hobby?
I consider it to be a hobby - since I still enjoy it! I do work a 9-5 as well as being part-time self-employed, but dream of one day doing this full time, selling lots of Indie crafters' work as well as my own, perhaps with a small tea room selling fresh cute cupcakes.

How do you go about selling your jewellery?

I sell at craft fairs, on Etsy and Folksy (online areas for selling hand-made goods) and in bricks-and-mortar shops, so I cover as much ground as I can.

What have you found the most effective channel for selling jewellery online?

Folksy has been the best so far. It's still in Beta stage, but because it's relatively new and currently only those in the UK can sell there, your work doesn't get buried as quickly as on Etsy. A lot of work has to be put into your own marketing though, which I'd rather spend making new designs!

You seem to have quite a lot of followers, what type of person buys your jewellery (if there is one type)?

It's difficult to say, because I don't know the online buyers, nor do I get to meet those who shop in the bricks and mortar. At craft fairs many are buying as gifts, but I know those who are buying for themselves tend to be young (17-25) and funky and willing to make a statement.

How useful have you found having a blog in promoting your jewellery?

It's really useful. You can post up ideas and get opinions, promote others' work and potentially get the same in return, write snippets about your day - I think it's good for people to get to know the person behind the product. I also have columns with links to the various places I am linked to (shops, social networking areas, etc). I don't have a website of my own, so for now, this is a great starting block.

On your blog, you mention the rise of indie crafters. What is an indie crafter and why do you think they are are on the rise?

'Indie' refers to 'independent', but mainly to those involved a more 'urban' stream of crafting. I think most people hear 'craft' and it conjures up images of crocheted doily's and knitted dolls. Indie craft is all about taking traditional techniques and mixing them with today's trends. I constantly hear sad stories about independent shops in the UK being closed to make way for more 'lemming' stores (for instance, Leeds' Corn Exchange, which will be sadly missed). Every high street becomes the same, every person of every high street looks the same... but finding an alternative is so much easier now, as Internet access is so readily available. Handmade goods can only be made in limited amounts, so the shopper knows they will own something that's not likely to be worn by anyone else. Documentaries naming and shaming chain stores that exploit child workers abroad and in turn force the buyer to take some responsibility also help us.

How useful have you found communicating with other jewellery makers in the online community in terms of technical /business/ marketing information?

The online community is amazing. I'm not sure I'd even be in business if it wasn't for the Internet. I started off using Craftster... now I use Crafteroo which is more for the UK based crafter. It's been a God send - no one in my family owns a business so I didn't have the first idea about taxes, registration and so forth. There's always someone willing to give their experience there, and I can pass mine on to more junior members too. Subscribing to other blogs also lets me know about other possibilities, such as publishing books and new networking sites. I also end up seeing lots of goodies to spend my money on! Twitter, Facebook and Myspace are also great places to show off your work and get new clientele.

LFW - Topshop Unique

pictures from www.style.com

I sometimes find it hard to think of Topshop Unique as real designer fashion. Perhaps it is just the link in my head with Topshop I spent much of my teenage years. Another aspect of Topshop Unique which differs from man designer collections is it's real wearability and the way that it seems to be so in touch with types of clothes that people will wear (or I will any way). Needless to say I loved the Autumn winter 09 collection. The interesting layering, the multitude of textures and eye catchingly different accessories. All very cleverly combined into a look that I think many young people will be able to identify with. I love the matching patterns on skirts and leggings, the flashes of neon colours with black, the great big chunky knit shawl like scarf, fingerless gloves and fringed details and accessories.

I was slightly shocked to read on style.com that the collection is aimed at teenagers who will not have remembered the eighties and early nineties first time around. I am hoping that it doesn't rule me out from wearing this look which I do remember from last time around, but only just. Perhaps that is why I love this collection so much.

Charles Anastase and Second Hand Clothes

charles anastase second hand clothes

charles anastase second hand clothes pictures from http://www.style.com/

I am so excited about London Fashion Week, apart from the fact that I have been unable to take any time out from my busy schedule as I am in the middle of lauching my new business (more on that in a minute). But in some ways, I feel more able to capture every little detail and to ponder and browse through the pictures at my own leisure here at home, I might as well look on the bright side.

Why am I so excited? Well when I look at the list of designers, I just can't wait to see their collections. So much new and exciting talent. One of the first collections to catch my eye was Charles Anastase. I am loving the second hand look. Everyone seems to be doing the second hand style thing at the moment. It is a much less polished way of dressing but much more interesting than many clothes straight from high street shops. The Charles Anastase collection just does it really well. I love the mixtures of colours and textures and eclectic style. I am not sure that I would want to pay designer prices for this look though, it would be much more fun to create something myself with second hand clothes.

This brings me neatly onto my next subject. My new website www.posh-swaps.com will launch at the beginning of April. It will be a place to swap, buy and sell second hand, vinatge and restyled/ recycled clothes (all free). The Posh Swaps blog is already up and running and I hope will give some ideas and inspiration for individual style using second hand clothing. All feedback is very welcome.

New York Fashion Week

I have made a very concious decision not to post about New York Fashion Week. Partly because there are so many people doing it so much better than I possibly could and partly because I am far too lazy. Anyone who wants to read more about it would be well advised to visit Style Bubble, Susie is able to give her usual great commentary with an insiders view as she is lucky enough to be there. Not that I am jealous of course as she absolutely deserves it.

So for todays post I have picked out just two outfits which I would most like to have. if I can't have them (which I can't) then perhaps they will just be a small amount of inspiration for my autumn winter wardrobe.

rodarte fall 09Rodarte - I don't know if I could pull off the long boots (I mean work this looks, rather than taking them off, although that might be tricky aswell). But I just love the textures of the skirt and the cowl neck thing with the jacket. Perhaps I can serach Etsy for something similar.

Erin Fetherstone fall 09Erin Fetherstone - I love the fabulour sparkly bits on this dress and peplum skirt. Overall a unique and interesting shape which makes a change from the same old stuff all the time.

Now time to concentrate on London which is by far my favourite of all the fashion weeks. Lots of new designers and talent to be checking out I can't wait.

Tutti Fruity Grape Prints

For spring summer 2009, something has really caught my eye. It is the grape print. I am not sure if this is something to do with lack of wine due to being on a detox this week, not drinking wine can do funny things to you. Why do I love these prints so much? Perhaps the rich and sophisticated colours or perhaps the vintage feel. They really remind me of old oil paintings and drawings, perhaps it is the memories of school days with hours spent in the art room painting still life paintings of fruit. Here are some of my favourite grape prints. To find more gorgeous grape prints ebay, second hand clothes sites and vintage shops are also ripe hunting ground for grapes.

Louise Gray

Bright colours, very flattering and wearable but with a twist, something a bit different, Louise Gray designs just the sort of clothes that I love. I love up and coming talent, new ideas and innovative styles, but often they just would not suit me as I am quite short. I have in previous posts made it quite clear that whilst I would love to be able to wear harem pants and lots of other trendy looks - I just can't because they don't do me any favours. Louise Gray manages to walk the fine line between keeping the designs fresh and innovative without making them suitable for very tall, very thin people. She specialises in hand embroidery, which is great for those like me that love details and beautifully decorated clothes.

Polyvore Guest Post - Neon Brights

Today I am posting a guest post for Polyvore. Here is my post. Thank you to the Polyvore peeps who created the amazing pictures that I have used.

I just can't get enough of the latest trend for neon's. I love all of the full on bright fluorescent, juicy, citrus, acid and neon colours. They remind me of signs that light up at night, those fluorescent socks that were in fashion years ago and the glow sticks that ravers used to wave around. Fluorescent colours were also a favourite for punks to colour their Mohican or spikey hair styles. But the latest trend for neon colours is about bold confident girls who know what they want and want to have fun.

There are a range of different looks that you can achieve using neon colours.

For a really high energy look, try combining as multi colour neon's for an eye popping effect.
