Clothing for petite women

Being only 5ft 2, I can sometimes find it quite a challenge buying clothes. It is not only that almost everything I look at is too long, but also many of the styles of clothes do not suit shorter women. It is not just a question of buying something and then shortening it, although I often do this with trousers and jeans. For clothes like jackets and dresses, the waist falls in the wrong place, making everything hang wrong. Clothes with detail around the hem are not easy to shorten without losing the detail.

I have over the years learnt ways if finding clothes that fit and suit petites. Much of this knowledge is passed on from my mum, who is also quite short and has considerable more years of experience in dressing as a petite. Whilst she is not the most adventurous of dressers, she always looks smart, stylish and in proportion.

The key to dressing well as a petite is all about balance and proportion. Yes you can wear this seasons trend for big shoulders, but the big shoulders need to be kept in proportion with your height. This is where shops stocking petite collections come into their own. Not only do they provide a range of clothes that fit perfectly including the waist falling in the right place, but they are also full of fashionable clothes that are suitable for a petite and look completely in proportion and stylish. Clothes in petite collections will usually help to lengthen the body and do not usually contain styles that make the body look any smaller.
For work wear I would definitely recommend Precis Petite. The clothes are smart and stylish but also with a fresh edge to them.  clothing for petite women

Second Hand Clothes

second hand clothes vintage suit jacket second hand clothes vintage suit skirt

I am get quite addicted to second hand clothes lately. I have really curbed my buying of new clothes both for financial and environmental reasons but couldn't go completely without some sort of fashion fix. I just can't beleieve what goodies I am finding whilst about and about on my travels, popping into a charity shop here and there, a car boot sale on a Sunday morning and my favourite local second hand shop. The fact that the clothes are second hand doesn't make any difference to me. They are all completely clean and well looked after. I get so much more quality for my money when buying second hand than buying cheap clothes in the high street shops.

For example, a few weeks ago, I treated myself to a eighties vintage Paul Costelloe Suit, quilted black silk with small metallic gold dots all over, a pencil skirt and jacket with large shoulder pads. I also got a very nice safari style Burberry Prorsum top for less than the price of the cheapest and most unethically produced t shirt on the market. This week, a Jaeger jacket in a pink that remined me of the Luella SS09 collection, a ditsy floral maxi dress by Jigsaw and a chunky wood and bead necklace for a fraction of the cost of anything similar that I could buy new. I apologise for lack of photos of me wearig the clothes, but I still haven't managed to get a camera that will take good enough pictures.

Part of the enjoyment of buying second hand clothes for me is finding something really gorgeous and well made and also getting a real bargain. But mostly knowing that my shopaholic habits are not contributing to the environmental impacts caused by the disposal and manufacture of fast fashion.

If you also love second hand clothes, please visit my clothes swap website where you can swap, buy and sell second hand clothes to your hearts content.

Summer Sales - The Little Black Dress

Summer sales are great for getting a bargain and if you follow the advice of just about every fashion editor, you should opt for timeless classic pieces to ensure a real bargain and help you get full value for money in these recession stricken times. I say Pah to the recession (i'm getting so bored of not buying new clothes) but perhaps the fashion editors have a point, quality, well made and classic clothes are usually very versatile, which makes it so much easier to justify the spend.

One of the most key and classic pieces in any girls wardrobe has to be the little black dress. This term encompasses a huge variety of styles but almost all share the same qualities of looking great for all sorts of ocassions. Here are my favourite investment little black dresses:

Fringe dress and other fringed clothes

fringe dress
Ever since fashion week when the SS09 collections were shown, I have been waiting for the fringe trend to filter onto the high street. With fringes and tassels apearing all over the catwalk including long fringe covered dresses at Jil Sander to strange hair fringes at Maison Martin Margiela.

I love the fringe trend and this is why:- fringes and tassels always hang downwards as gravity dictates, therefore they always create slimming vertical lines. Fringes are also a great way of disguising lumps and bumps, they hang over them rather than clinging to them. I love the texture and movement that fringes add to an outfit.

There are various ways to wear this seasons fringe trend from elegant fringe dresses to small bits of fringing around the edge of a piece of clothing or on accessories like bags and shoes. I love the bags and shoes idea for a bit of summer Boho, but for all out elegance, I have been searching high and low for a lovely but very affordable fringe dress. This cream Vila fringe dress at Dorothy Perkins is the answer to my prayers.

Whilst searching, I also found some other very gorgeous fringed pieces.

Shea Butter Soap

I don't usually blog about anything other than fashion and style but today I am making an exception. I have for a while looking for a great soap for sensitive skin that is moisturising and nourishing and also adds a bit of luxury to my daily routine. Shea butter soap from L'OCCITANE is just what I have been looking for. It is a nautural product made of 100% vegetable base with shea butter and verbena.

To add to the feel good factor, L'OCCITANE works directly with women's Shea-processing collectives in western Africa, supporting economic recovery and a heritage of natural harvesting traditions. The packaging is also very nice, understated but stylish. Using this soap makes me feel tres chic. Not surprising as L'OCCITANE was founded in Haute Provence drawing inspiration from Mediterranean art de vivre and traditional Provencal techniques.

Graduate Fashion Week Recycled

recycled clothes
I was really pleased to see that some of the recent trend for second hand clothes and recycled clothes was evident at graduate fashion week in the collection of Lucie Vincini. Graduate fashion week is especially important in influencing future trends as it is likely to be these students that will be the some of the rising stars of fashion over the next few years. The choice to use recycled products will definitely earn them some brownie points with the eco types but they will also have to hold their own in terms of style and innovation. I think Lucie's collection was definitely a collection to be taken seriously and not one just with the novelty factor of being environmentally friendly.

The menswear collection by Lucie Vincini, graduate of UCA Epsom was eclectic, innovative and theatrical. It used a range of recycled materials including a jacket made of Royal Mail bags and trousers made of carrier bags.

Geek Chic

eyeglasses online
Geek Chic has been a hot trend for some seasons now. There are so many ways that you can work this trend but one of the easiest and most stylish ways is to get a great pair of glasses. You can find all sort of amazing frames to suit your budget and your prescription. The right pair of frames can instantly make you look like you are very intelligent.

If you are concerned about buying eyeglasses online as you will not be able to try them on. Don't worry, I have found this great tool on which allows you to try them on virtually- hours of fun to be had!

I am rather liking my intelligent new look.

Fit Flops for Fab Legs and Bums

fit flops I have, in the past, raved about Fit Flops and I wouldn't be without my trusty pair for both comfort and toning. I love to walk whenever and where ever I can. As I have such a busy life gym or exercise classes are out of the question. The Fit Flop is ideal as I get a bit of a work out on my legs and bum where ever I walk because of the 'microwobbleboardTM midsole technology' which makes the muscles work that little bit extra and helps to tone them.

Each year I am tempted to buy a different style from the ever growing collection. This year I would love to have the electra bronze, a great neutral colour to go with smart casual clothes and also a bit of sparkle to brighten up my day.

Jumpsuits and Playsuits

I have been harping on about jumpsuits and playsuits for a few years now. This summer I really think the jumpsuit and playsuit trend has gone main stream, with Marks and Spencers even having their own version. I am completely in love with jumpsuits and playsuits as they are a ready made outfit with no need to decide on a separate tops and bottoms to wear, a bit like dresses (which I also love) but even more practical. There are so many different playsuits and jumpsuits out there this season, I think there absolutely has to be something for everyone from cute floral ones to cutting edge harem ones. So here it is a todays mega post with all of my favourite playsuits and jumpsuits.

Sequins are becoming quite a big trend for this summer, not just for the evening but for the daytime as well. "I can't wear sequins in the daytime" I hear you saying. Well you are wrong, you can wear sequins and look absolutely stunning in the day time. The key to wearing a sequin dress in the day time is choosing a very simple or t shirt style or sequin dress. Wear it with leggings and flat boots, minimal accessories and very simple hair and make up. You can then work the new urban sparkle trend where ever you like.

Seaside Style

Every time I go on holiday to a British seaside resort in Devon or Cornwall, I always pack a suitcase of my favourite outfits and some practical and warm clothes for the unpredictable British weather and of course for making sandcastles on the beach with the children. When I arrive, I never feel like I have brought the right clothing and long for some of what I would describe as seaside clothing. This is the sort of clothes that I would never dream of wearing at home but just seems so perfect and stylish for wandering around seaside towns, flying a kite or chilling out on the beach.

Perhaps it is the change of routine and all that fresh air that gives me complete style amnesia until the point where I leave to go home. Perhaps it is that all of my favourite clothes from home are impractical for wearing on the beach or perhaps it is that the seaside towns of Devon and Cornwall are full of shops piled high with outdoorsy seaside style clothes. Think Seasalt, Whitestuff, Joules and some lovely boutique style shops.

I would never usually be seen dead in a hoody but for the duration of my holiday, hoodies, cropped trousers and surfer chic dresses are all objects of desire.
