Lacking a winter coat

snood
next snood
Today I was so cold and just wanted to wrap up really warm. Unfortunately my new coat from Next is on a 2-4 week delivery. Luckily the snood that I ordered has turned up. I decided to keep nice and warm by layering, perhaps a more interesting and creative outfit than just throwing on a winter coat.

I completely love my new snood. It is so cosy and warm but not too tight around my neck and nice chunky knit. If it gets really cold, I might even pull it up over my head to keep my ears lovely and warm. Or pull it down over my shoulders when I am around the house on a really cold day.

Dress Me Up at Topshop

dress me up

Another exciting fashion initiative from Topshop, this time, it is for charity (Age Concern and Help the Aged) so no guilt at money spent. What perfect timing, just in time for Christmas, you can pop along to the Oxford Street store (if you are near enough) and try on one of their dresses donated by celebrities and designers. If the dress fits (sizes range from 6-14) then you can book a slot to hire it for a day. At the end the dresses will be auctioned for charity.
I am definitely having another 'I wish I lived in London' day

Style Challenge on the Fashion Spot

Just to allow myself the opportunity to get creative and pass the time until the weekend, I decided to set up a style challenge on The Fashion Spot. Each week (on a Thursday), there will be a different source of inspiration to create an outfit with. I thought it would be interesting to see how everyone takes the same inspiration and then interprets it into their own style.
Users can then vote for the best outfit on the following Wednesday and the winner can choose the inspiration for the following week. The inspiration can be anything from a picture, to a place, a designer, a celebrity or a decade.
This week, I started off the challenge with the inspiration being 'a trip to the zoo'. Here is my feeble attempt at an outfit, hope there are lots more better ones.

Style Eyes Weekly Round Up 19/11/09

bamboo clothing pandas picture from Bamboo Baby blog

I am have been a little lax with the weekly roundups over the last week. Same old excuses I am afraid, lots of work (that is a good thing though), organising a clothes swap party and the odd one or two jolly's, which I think I thoroughly deserve. Anyone before I bore everyone to death with my life story, here is this weeks round up.

Posh Swaps - I asked the question, what can you make from a load of old rubbish? and found out the answer was quite a lot actually in the form of lovely accessories. I discovered a great website to make green living mcuh easier in the post Wekangogreen - can you?. I outlined which are the perfect clothes for swapping and finally I checked out Terra Plana - recycled quilt shoes.

Shmotter - as well as having lots of fun making outfits, I wrote about one of my favourite colours in the post Mellow Yellow. I show ways that you can become a bit of an animal with animal prints. It might seem like ages away but Christmas is only just over a month away so I thought it time to post about Party Time - Christmas Dresses. I ask the question what happened to Lily? and check out her new style. Finally I urge readers to join the campaign to save Luella.

Bamboo Baby - As well as the usual talk of organic baby clothes, I review devidoll - a stylish and ethical boutique. I show how you can be stylish, recycle and fight poverty. I talk about the Pandas threatened by climate change and the loss of their bamboo food, but don't worry, bamboo clothing does not affect pandas at all. I also review new ethical/ eco label Urban Buzz for its trendy and sustainable fashion.

Come Back Luella

Luella inspired outfit

After my last post about saving Luella, Florrie of Intrinsically Florrie alerted me of her Save Luella Campaign which I was only too happy to participate in. As usual after to agreeing to make an outfit inspired by Luella, I looked in my wardrobe to discover nothing by Luella (boo) and no direct copies of Luella pieces. However I know that Luella's designs do have a big influence on some of the outfits that I wear in an indirect kind of way. When I think about Luella I think of pretty dresses, bows, florals and those amazing colour combinations in her SS09 collection (which is definitely one of my favourite collections) all combined in a clever and quirky way

I have concluded that I need more Luella pieces, especially as they may not be around for much longer. As my outfit is very much a wearable day to day outfit, I decided to create a more whimsical Luella inspired outfit on Shmotter, giving me a chance to create something much more interesting that is not confined by the contents of my wardrobe.

Wolford Fringed and Henry Holland Tights

wolford fringed tightsI probably make no secret of the fact that I am obsessed with tights. I am just completely fasinated by the huge variety of coloured, patterned, netted tights and now fringed tights that can be used to enhance or accessorise so many outfits. I think statement tights are fast becoming the latest must have accessory (much to the disgust of most men who much prefer stockings!).

These new fringed tights from Wolford (above) really caught my eye as they almost look like a pair of boots.

Whilst on the subject of tights, I am also loving Henry Hollands range of tights including these colour card ones which are available in black, blue, purple and pink.

Seat Belt Couture - great eco and style credentials

eco fashion
seat belt couture
recycled fashion
greta constantine

I regularly write about eco fashion as part of my work (writing and blogging) but I don't feature eco fashion on Style Eyes very often. The reason for this is that I fully support eco fashion and am keen to promote sustainable style as much as I can. I do this primarily by offering a free place for people to recycle, swap, buy and sell second hand clothes and promoting eco fashion labels for free on my website posh-swaps.com. But Style Eyes is my own personal style blog about clothes and the fashion that I wear so I selfishly reserve it for the posts that I really want to write. In other words, I love writing about eco fashion on Style Eyes but it must be Eco fashion that means something to me.

So enough of the rambling, I recently spotted on Ecouterre, a new eco fashion site by Jil Fehrenbacher founder of eco design website Inhabitat, somthing that instantly made me want to get blogging (not really about it's eco credentials though).
These designs made using upcycled seat belts are by Greta Constantine, the label of Canadian design duo Stephen Wong and Kirk Pickersgill. A look at their website revealed lots of other amazing pieces but perhaps they are for another post. I love the shine and texture of the seatbelts and the clever way that their stiffness and structure has been used to created such amazing and structured pieces. Definitely eco fashion at its best!

Urban Buzz

teal top
top by urban buzz
Yippee I have just received my new top very kindly sent to me by Swedish designer, Annette Lennerup at Urban Buzz. I couldn't wait to wear it with my new yellow tights that I have been dying to make an outfit with. The Berlin knit top in Teal was the perfect match.
I love the shape of this top with a cowl neck, batwing sleeves and thumb holes in the sleeves so that I could pull them down over my hand (I love this it keeps me warm and makes my arms looks longer). It made me feel really sophisticated and glamorous. The good new is that not only is Urban Buzz a fun, trendy and quirky label, it is also ethical and environmentally friendly with this top being 100% organic cotton and them building towards environmental responsibility by using organic materials whereever possible.

Some of the other pieces that particularly caught my eye in the collection were:

knit dress

pattern dress

The Balham Dress

Why does it always rain on the school run?

stylish rain coat ponchoIt is nearly time to pick the children up from nursery and school and guess what? it's raining again. Perhaps I just don't really notice it raining the rest of the time but it always seems to rain on the school run, more often than not when I am least expecting it. I go out completely unprepared without a coat and the heavens open.

Even on the days that I know it is going to rain and have adequate time to prepare myself, I still end up looking like a drowned rat. The reason, that I refuse to buy (or wear) one of those sensible sort of outdoorsy raincoats that many of the mums wear. No offense to them, I admire them for their sensible approach but it is just not my style. I also struggle to carry an umbrella as I am usually pushing a pushchair or carrying a very wriggly toddler

Which is why I was so chuffed with myself when I came across Rainwave. They sell ponchos that strike just the right balance between practicality and style. In fact as their website says if rain wear looks this good, I might actually 'pray for rain'. They also have a pack away pouch so I can stash one in my handbag and never need get caught short again. They are great colours and great designs. I love the patterns which include a sort of retro shape and an Inca design.

Save Luella

save luella I thought I should join so the so many other fashion blogger voices hoping that Luella will be saved. How sad it would be if the brand were lost for ever. I found this great badge on I want to know and It says it all, I have my fingers crossed. If there is anyone with a big pot of money please save Luella, I hope one day I would be able to own a Luella piece (or two).

Cardigans or knitwear is general is not something that I used to think of as particularly fashion forward more perhaps the domain of my Grandma (not that she doesn't have her own great style). But lately new an innovative styles of knitwear seems to be popping up all over the place.
I recently came across Chantell Walters, a designer of cardigans (although her cardi's are a bit more exciting than your average cardigan). Chantell is London College of Fashion graduate with a BA in Fashion Design and Technology Womenswear. The Niquitin CQ Fashion awards recognised her as a future star of fashion for her conceptual parachute dress. She also interned for British design duo Preen and Gavin Douglas.

I love Chantell's fluid and draped cardigans in oversized cocoon shapes, pefect for wearing over leggings and a top. Thay have large arm holes adding to the unusual shape and play on proportions and I love the colours and patterns. Her cardigans are stocked in SHOP 172 Brick Lane. Hmm, I can feel a trip to London coming on very soon.

All Laced Up - The Lace Bodysuit

lace bodysuit picture from style.com

That Stella McCartney lace bodysuit keeps catching my eye. I have absolutely no idea why, as it is just so far from the realms of what I could or would want to wear. But I love the texture and intricate detail of lace, it contrasts so well with the body con style of the bodysuit.

simon preen jumpsuit
Then I spotted this Lace insert jumpsuit from LCF grad Simon Preen's debut collection which is exclusively at Urban Outfitters. A much more affordable option than Stella's but again, far too daring for me and just wouldn't suit me. But it got me thinking about layering and this could work well for me if layered with some other clothes - actually though some lace leggings and a body would have much the same effect if not quite as streamlined but would cost a bit less.

lace leggings simon preen

Then I discovered these leggings again by Simon Preen - finally a great way for me to get in on this trend in a way that suits me and my budget. I think I am in love.

lace body

I think they would look great with this lace v body and this tulip skirt layered over them for a lace outfit that is not too bodycon. Hmm definitely a possibilty for my very limited clothes budget.tulip skirt

Rainbow Bright

black colour outfit
When I saw Susie Bubble's post pick a colour, any colour, I just couldn't resist partaking in the challenge set to "cram as many colours into one outfit just using solid block pieces and no prints and patterns". I knew from the outset that the outfit would involve clashing in a major way and a certain amount of layering as I have relatively few coloured clothes in my wardrobe (that do not have patterns) and none that are ready colour blocked. I also knew that this was a challenge that would need to take place under cover of darkness as if Mr Style Eyes were to see me he would be bound to fall off of his chair laughing. So whilst Mr Style Eyes took our eldest daughter to fireworks, I stayed in with baby Style Eyes. Once we had polished off our bowls of pasta and glass of white wine (me not the baby). I grabbed everything coloured that I own and threw it all on together. I would like to say that a bit more though went into it but I'm afraid it didn't, the fireworks don't last long and they usually get back early because they are cold.

Anyway the result was perhaps not something I would wear out - the combination of primary colours giving it a sort of Rainbow Bright or mad Playschool presenter sort of feel. I added the belt at the last minute to give it a slightly more grown up feel and add another block of colour(if you can call black a colour). An interesting excerise as I often colour block with two colours but never this many, it has inspired me to try a few more. I wished that my new mustard tights that are on order has turned up and also that I had a royal blue clutch to complete the outfit.
The outfit was made of:
Purple hat - Dorothy Perkins
Yellow T shirt - charity shop
Red dress - Jackpot
Green Jacket - Marks and Spencers
Black Belt - ASOS
Purple tights - Dorothy Perkins
Green and plum shoes - Poetic Licence from ASOS

Very stylish armchair shoes by Kron

Kron shoes
V store Copenhagenzebra print shoes
lovely shoes I recently spotted these shoes by Kron, from V store Copenhagen via Farfetch.com. I was immediately attracted by their colours, shapes, texture and detail. I also muttered to myself "wow a gorgeous pair of shoes that I would actually wear" as opposed to a spindly heeled pair which I have many of and never really find suitable occasion for, plus the heels wear out after only a few wears. But enough about practicalities- fashion would be very boring if it were only about what was comfortable and practical to wear.

The chunkiness of these shoes actually adds to the appeal. Can you imagine finding this level of detail and interest on a teensy weensy pair of stilletto heels. I love the combinations of zebra stripes, rich colours, rattan, velvet, fishnet and shininess. They remind me of a very stylish but comformable armchair the sort that you might find in a very expensive bar in London (not that I often frequent such a place). I also love the shape, the curve of the heels and the slightly offset and raised sole.

Rudolph and Reindeer Fashion

colin firth reindeer jumperReindeer jumpers or for that matter, any jumpers with large pictures of animals on the front have always been a bit of a joke. Something about them being knitted by your granny for Christmas. Do you remember the Reindeer jumper worn by Colin Firth in Bridget Jones's Diary?(which incidently fetched £1900 at a charity auction, so quite an expensive joke!). But lately all of that has been turned on it's head. Reindeers have been popping up in all sorts of unexpected places and actually, I am quite liking them. They are really quite stylish in a cosy Nordic sort of way (and they remind that it's not long until Christmas and Santa will be here soon).
