Erdem Style Florals

It has just been announced that Erdem, one of my favourite designers is the winner of the BFC/Vogue Fashion Fund. The award includes £200, 000 and access to director level mentors across the industry. It aims to help rising stars in the ever competitive fashion industry and assist them in developing their business.

This is great news as it means there will be lots more to come from Erdem and I can't wait. If I could afford it, I would probably wear Erdem almost every day.

Erdem Inspired dress
So to celebrate, todays outfit has a definite bit of Erdem inspiration. I love this dress but have worn it so much recently, I have been starting to get a little bored of it. As I am not buying any new clothes at the moment, I am making the most of what I have. Today I decided to try something a little different with this dress so tried combining it with a straight mesh skirt and cropped leather jacket Unfortunately, I couldn't wear the leather jacket out as it was far too wet and windy so had to swap for a coat that covered up the dress completely, never mind, I am sure better weather will be here soon. I am also trying out a new hairstyle a side braid. One side of my hair has come down, but I quite like it that way and certainly stops it blowing every where in the wind.

Supermarket Couture

With the high street shops constantly battling to prove how fashion forward they are, seems like the supermarkets are now following suit. Yesterday Tesco launched its new Florence and Fred Couture range. Initially I was very sceptical. Is it really going to be Couture or is it just a marketing ploy?

Couture has various definitions in the dictionary including fashionable custom made women's clothing (it isn't custom made), or an abreviation of Haute Couture, which has a very strict criteria that I am sure Tesco's do not fulfil. However despite its perhaps slightly misleading name, the collection is quite promising if quite expensive. Not having seen any of the 16 pieces from the collection up close, it is difficult to make a judgement on quality but there is clearly a lot more attention being paid to the construction of this range than the usual supermarket ranges of clothes with some interesting details like external zips and tiny buttons and loops to fasten.
Tesco Florence and fred couture pagoda dress

tesco florence and fred couture sequin jacket
I love the shapes and sculptural structures of some of the pieces including the pagoda dress and sequin jacket. teco florence and fred couture racer back toptesco couture florence and fred silk dress
There are also some great custom prints such as the one featured on this silk dress and racer back top.

I also like the way Tesco are going in offering quality over quantity which is better for the environment. But I do find it slightly strange that the Pagoda dress is made from 100% polyester and many of the clothes have polyester linings, not really sure that I could justify paying £140 for a polyester dress. Using unsustainable materials in these clothes is also going against everything they are trying to say with their new recycled/ eco range. There are however some options in pure silk and cotton mixes.

Overall I quite like the designs and love the colour schemes but am struggling a bit with the price and synthetic materials. The 16 piece collection is only available online, so I won't be getting the opportunity to pop a bit of 'Tesco couture' in my shopping trolley along with my Coco Pops, not for now anyway!

Clocks spring forward - SS10 trends floral

It's officially summer time (sort of). I was woken up this morning by a small child wanting cuddles. Before I had the chance to say it is my turn for a lie in, Mr Style Eyes, reminded me that although my clock said 5am, it was actually 6am, at which point I gave in and got up. On the down side, I have been pretty tired all day, on the plus side, I got time for a bit of early morning outfit planning. I know, very sad, but it beats watching Dora the Explorer for the hundredth time.

Anyway today's outfit was is part of my No More Wants Challenge, where I create looks for SS10 using clothes already in my wardrobe. It is however a bit of a cop out as florals are always in fashion in spring and summer. I wanted to try wearing this dress in a slightly different way to the way I wore it for the whole of last summer so I tried wearing it with snake skin tights which freak me out ever so slightly as they make my legs look like snakes. I then tried a few different cardigans/ jackets. I am not sure if I can carry off the pale sort of colours of the dress with the grey jacket and it does make my hips look even larger but I like the contrast of feminine and grey casual. I couldn't resist trying with the pink cardi, one of my favourite colours.

Bellisimo - Emma Bell SS10

With the clocks going forward last night, holidays all booked up and the sniff of sunshine and warmer weather that we have been getting over the last week, I am feeling ready for the summer (and spring of course). For me summer is all about brightly coloured clothes, the brightness of the days just seem to make the brightest of bright OK in a way that it never could be on a cold winter day.

One of the really bright looks that I have noticed cropping up quite a bit in the SS10 collections is the kind of rainbow coloured prints and tie dye effects. Of course there has also been plenty of my favourite look - pattern mixing. The Emma Bell SS10 collection features both of these in some very desirable summer looks. Fake boswams aside (that is what they are isn't it?), I think the collection is a highly wearable form of these trends. Some great dresses and I love the way they have been teamed with some great coloured and patterned tights for outfits that would work so much better than bare legs for me, especially on those days when the sun isn't baking hot.

Emma Bell has showcased at two solo catwalk shows at LFW, part of the Super Super Show LFW, NYC AGAINST HIV and Vienna Fashion Week. She also works as a design consultant for a variety of companies including GM/Vauxhall Motors, Irregular Choice, Designers Against Aids, Jodie Harsh and Lambrini. F

Links à la Mode : DIY Nation

Edited by Fashion Pulse Daily

It seems that across the board, there has been a resurgence in DIY, as we are very much living in a world of ‘Do it Yourself’ everything; ranging from creating or updating or garments’ silhouettes and decorative details to showcasing our own versions of runway looks, virtually styling with tools like Polyvore, tackling self-photography, and of course self-publishing via our blog platforms. We reign supreme in the DIY world on a daily basis, and I only see this trend gaining momentum. The roundup of this week’s links is definitely an indication, directly and indirectly, of the incredibly creative, innovative, persevering, motivated folks that are part of the new DIY frontier, and of course, IFB!

As expected, there was a fabulous round-up of links in the forum as well, all worthy of your eyeballs!

Pattern mixing from the feet up

If you are a regular reader of this blog you might have observed my slight obsession with pattern mixing. I pattern mix on a daily basis, with almost everything I wear having some sort of pattern mix or clash. At the moment and in keeping with this summers trends, I am especially fond of mixing stripes, checks, polka dots and florals.

As I have recently partnered with Spartoo Women Shoes, a French online shoe retailer selling a very desirable selection of shoes including some quite quirky brands and designers (more posts to follow), I came across Stephane Verdino, a French designer recognised for his minimalism and quality but also one who sets the rules rather than follows them.

I was instantly drawn to these lace up shoes that fit so well with the current androgynous and masculine trends. They would look amazing contrasted with a feminine floral dress, a pair of floral trousers or equally well with a plain navy or denim skirt. They have opened a whole new chapter for me: pattern mixing from the feet up. But I may also be very tempted to abandon pattern mixing now and then in favour of a simple navy outfit which really allows these gorgeous shoes to take the centre stage that they deserve.

How would you wear yours?

Travelling in style - the laptop handbag

laptop handbagsTrips up to London are becoming more and more common for me. I love going to London but with a 2 hour train journey including the tube, it can seem like a bit of a trek. As I am always so short of time the train journey is the perfect opportunity to catch up on some work or blogging but then I am left having to lug my laptop around London. At London Fashion Week the weight of my bag was overwhelming and I felt physically exhausted with major shoulder ache by the time I got home.

The Tiffany Anisette B.A.G must have been made for me and my trips up to London. I have been looking for the right laptop bag for a while and can't seem to find the right one. I am not fond of anything functional looking and prefer just one big handbag if possible. Not only is this bag massive to fit in my laptop, camera etc but it is gorgeous soft leather, looks like a designer handbag and has wheels and a pull out handle so when I tire of carrying it, I can pull it along. A well justified business expense I think but also invaluable as luggage when Mr Style Eyes takes me to Paris later in the year!

More Florals and Denim

I love florals and I love denim but combine the two and I my perfect summer outfit. I have made this outfit as part of my no more wants challenge - the denim and floral trend as seen a Ralph Lauren.

As it was such a sunny weekend, I decided to dust off my sunglasses and get out and about. Unfortunately I think this may be the last wear of my gorgeous yellow flower dress. The straps are just too long and it doesn't sit right and my bra keeps showing. Gorgeous as it is I don't feel comfortable in it and it annoyed me all day. Unfortunately I have no idea how I could shorten the straps as they have such intricate embroidery. Never mind I think I will list to swap on www.posh-swaps.com and hopefully swap for something gorgeous, the perfect alternative to shopping (as I am on a shopping ban). I have already swapped some other stuff today, so I am not feeling nearly as bad about my shopping ban.
I am feeling very happy today. So many exciting plans for the spring and summer, I can't wait.

The Wang Effect

I am just sat here typing, with my Wangesque braid, considering what it is about Alexander Wang that means he can take something seemingly mundane and make it hip, cool and trendy. I would never usually even consider plaiting my hair for fear of looking like a school girl or even worse an old lady but I just can't get enough of a my lopsided plait at the moment.

Take leggings for example, I swore that I would never wear them again after the horrendous abuse of them that I witnessed in the eighties. Yet here I am a few decades on, in worse shape and living in my leggings in the name of fashion (well actually they are pretty comfy as well and go with almost anything). I have a rule this time around though, leggings are only to be worn with dresses or long tunic style tops.

Grey marl is that non descript colour that no one really took much notice of until Alexander Wang brought it back on the hip list (OK there are a few others who have been using it too like Isabel Marant). Strangely I have always had a bit of a thing for grey marl perhaps because it reminds me of my youth. Slouchy jersey another Wangism that is just about every where. For years I would never have considered wearing slouchy clothes, but when cleverly cut and layered, not only are they warm, comfy and practical beyond belief but they look pretty good too in an understated way.

Then there are crop tops. There are somethings in life that you just can't wear at my age after having 2 children. So why is a crop top (in grey marl) featuring right at the top of my must have list for this summer? Admittedly, this time around I will be layering it so there will be no midriff on show. I think I may be turning into a full time Wang-a-be.

And then there are the trackie trousers - but I won't be going there, well I don't think I will anyway!

So what is the 'Wang Effect'? Is he an exceptionally talented designer, is it just the hype or is he managing to tap into just the sort of look that everyone wants to wear? I think it is a bit of all of these. A lot of his ideas are nothing new, almost nostalgic (although probably won't be for most of the twenty something Wangites wearing his clothes) but Alexander Wang seems to be able to do comfortable, wearable and relaxed it in way that is fresh and hip with just a hint of glamour

Just out of interest, does anyone have any other Words derived from Wang to add?

A green summer dress for St Patricks day

Happy St Patricks day (for tomorrow) to celebrate the occasion, I thought I would write a post on the green dress. Green is actually one of my favourite colours and one which I think it is an severely unutilised colour in terms of fashion. I love all sorts of green from khaki to lime and mint green. I also love green combined with other colours in patterns. There are so many different greens, surely there is something for everyone. Here are some of my favourite green dresses of the moment.
Lola Dress by Komodo - I think khaki is possibly my favourite shade of green and right on trend this year. I also love the subtle pattern on this dress, could definitely be worn with leggings as my spring 'uniform'.

Green Inca Tunic Dress - a complex and intricate pattern with a great combination of greens.

St Martins embellished back dress - this vibrant shade of green may not be to every ones liking but I love it. This wrap style of dress is also really flattering.

Philosophy Di Alberta Ferretti Draped dress - I love the simple style and elegant draping of this dress as well as the warm green colour, the perfect summer party dress.

Fever Seamist Tunic Dress -love this bold pattern in a bold colour. It really reminds me of the sea.

Mothers Day weekend and lots of outfits

What a beautiful weekend. I have really enjoyed the sunshine. On Saturday afternoon, we went for an early dinner at the local pub. I tried out a few different outfits. After my last post on my clothes obsessions, I decided to try some outfits with some of my many jackets.

In the end I decided to go for the first and safest option on the basis that Mr Style Eyes would probably refuse to step foot in the local pub with me in the others. I have a few occasions in mind when I could wear the others though

Sunday was Mothers Day. I was lucky enough to wake up (or should I say was woken up at 5.30am) to champagne, flowers, choccies, 5 cards (pretty good considering I only have 2 children) and lots of cuddles. After a whole hour and a half to myself, spent looking through my wardrobe and trying on clothes, I took the children to the park, where we had our first picnic of the year. Admittedly it was slightly chilly but the sun was out so who cares.

yummy mummy styleMy Mothers Day outfit choice, needed to be yummy mummy, but not mumsy! Also practical for trying out the zip wire at the park. Not sure if I actually achieved this, but I swapped the wedge boots for flats before going to the park. I bleached these jeans last year and I still love them. I though I would try a look I have seen (not sure where) black and white trousers combined with camel/ neutral top

When I got back we had champagne and then a Chinese take away. duck pancakes with plum sauce, cucumber and spring onion is officially my new favourite food. I was going to take some delicious looking pictures but unfortunately, the temptation was to great and I ate them first.

On a final note, I have just realised how outrageously out of date my blogroll is. I will be updating it is the next week and removing any links to sites that do not have regularly updated and interesting posts. If you would like to be added please leave a comment.

Shopping patterns and clothes obsessions

Looking through my ridiculously overstuffed wardrobe, as I have been lately, I have noticed a few shopping patterns or clothes obsessions that I seem to have. The problem being that whilst I dearly love all of the clothes in my wardrobe, and the ones hanging on the extra rail in my spare room/ office, Some of them don't get that much wear perhaps because of my lifestyle or perhaps because I have so much of the same.
Jackets - I was amazed to count up all of my jackets and find that I have 20 jackets ranging from causal and denim to tailored, vintage and 1 designer one by Jaeger, this picture shows just a few. Is this too many? I think that with the tailored jackets, I may still be living in the past, when I worked in an office and needed lots of work clothes. These days I work from home so only occasionally get dressed up for client meetings.
My biggest frustration with winter is that I don't get to wear my jackets as the weather isn't warm enough and a winter coat is more practical. Unfortunately I have little in the way of stylish winter alternatives or coats. I have also bought quite a few jackets second hand. Tailored jackets are often some of the best buys in the charity or second hand shop so I just can't resist buying them. Roll on the spring and summer so I can wear my jackets every day.

Black and White - I love striking, bold and eye catching clothes, so perhaps this is why I seem to keep buying black and white. Generally I wear my black and white clothes quite a bit, I just always feel good in them. I do have quite a few other colourful and patterned clothes as well.

Scarves - some of my scarves are presents from my mum, who I have probably inherited my scarf addiction from. I spend a bit of time most mornings selecting a scarf to wear but often take it off after about half an hour. Unfortunately at this time in my life, when I spend a lot of time carrying a toddler around, they just aren't that practical to wear.
So does anyone else find themselves drawn to buying the same sorts of clothes all the time? If so what are your clothes obsessions?

Oscar red carpet dresses

Every year when the Oscars takes place, I take great delight in checking out the red carpet dresses that the celebrities wear. I wish that I had an opportunity to get really dressed up in a beautiful dress just once (apart from getting married which I have already done). For my next big birthday, perhaps I will organise an Oscar themed party for my friends where everyone gets to wear their own Oscar Dress, well the women anyway.

What I love about the Oscars is the huge variety of colours and styles of dress that everyone wears so carefully selected to look stunning on them whatever their colouring and body shape. Of course, every year there are some big mistakes, great for reminding us all that nobody is perfect and we all have these moments - don't we?

The Oscars are a great place to get inspiration for Christmas Party Dresses.

Probably my favourite this year, although a difficult choice would have to be Sandra Bullock in shimmering silver Marchesa.
